Stained Glass Kits FAQ – How To Choose A Stained Glass Cutter by Machelle Firth
Stained glass kits are great, but they aren’t much use if you don’t have the right stained glass cutter to work with.
Here are some tips for choosing a glass cutter, for any budget, to help you make good accurate cuts in this burgeoning art form.
Option No.1: Pen Mightier Than the Sword
Pen-shaped cutters can definitely be a cost-effective way to go. (They usually run from around 10-20 dollars.)
Perhaps the biggest downside to these is how they feel. For those with older hands, like me, these can be a tad difficult. (Basically if writing with a pen cramps your hand, then this kind of cutter might be a little tough.)
Pros/inexpensive; portable
Cons/Can be hard to grip; not the most precise cutter.
Option No.2: Pull Out Your Pistol
The next step up in glass cutters is the pistol-shaped models. For most serious hobbyists this cutter is weapon of choice. Not only does it feel awesome in your hands, but it can also get you some really clean cuts.
Still with a price range in the 20-40 dollar range they can be a bit spendy for the newbie stained glass artist.
Pros/Great feel, Accurate cuts, Portable.
Cons/Slightly more expensive.
Option No.3: Step Into the Circle
When it comes to finding the highest quality products nothing beats a circle version. What are these? Cutters that operate on a swivel mount which you mount on your desk. There’s no easier way to use this tool. (And no better way to make super precise cuts to help transform your handiwork into a veritable piece of art.).
You do have to pay a bit for these cutters. (about 40-60 dollars.) And they aren’t small, so they aren’t easily portable for taking to kid’s parties or anywhere else.
Pros/Excellent cutting; easy and simple to operate.
Cons/Not portable; spendy.
